During church yesterday, the pastor asked us something that I didn’t have an answer for. Do you have a Bible verse, one that you go back to for your life? How does it feel when you read it? How does it actually guide you?
I sat there and realized something I wasn't expecting to realize. I built this whole company on Scripture. I write it on cards. I put it in sprays (coming soon). I think about it every single day. And I didn't have one. Not one that was mine that was tattooed on my wrist to see every day.
So I've been sitting with two.
The first one feels like His vision for me.
"He said to them, 'Come, follow me, and I will make you fishers for men.'"* Matthew 4:19 (WEB)
I keep coming back to this one because it isn't really about the fish. It's about being called away from what you already know how to do, toward something you don't. Peter and Andrew had nets in their hands. They knew boats. They knew water. And Jesus didn't ask them to abandon what they knew, he asked them to bring it somewhere new. I think about that a lot when I think about why I'm building this. I have marketed and built communities my entire career, it’s something I’m good at. But what I’m realizing now is He was cultivating that part of me to eventually community build for Him. Reaching her, the woman a few rows back at church, or a few states away with something that actually lands. That's the calling I keep having to remember.
The second one is the one is my daily struggle. One that has gotten better as I dig into the Word more.
"Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you."* 1 Peter 5:7 (WEB)
Not tuck it away. Not manage it. Cast it, throw it, hand it off completely because He actually cares what happens to me. Some weeks that verse is the only thing keeping my shoulders down from around my ears.
So if I had to answer the pastor's question honestly: I don't have one Bible verse. I have a calling and I have a comfort. Maybe that's allowed.
